Happy New Year! Here we present the 2017 Rail Transit Rankings.
In this year's statistics, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou continue to firmly occupy the top three spots with solid standings. Nanjing has risen in the rankings, replacing Shenzhen to take fourth place, while Chongqing, Wuhan, and Chengdu continue their upward momentum. Suzhou and Hangzhou, two cities that only opened their metros in 2012, have officially seen their operating mileage enter the "Over 100km Club."
Meanwhile, there are new members this year: Shijiazhuang, Xiamen, Guiyang, and Taoyuan (Note: Mileage within Taipei and New Taipei City is counted under Taipei). As of now, the number of cities with operating metros in China has increased to 35.
As forms of rail transit become increasingly diverse, future ranking dimensions will expand. Data on intercity rail, trams, and other modes will gradually be added to the rankings, and the summary format will evolve accordingly.
Note: These statistics include Maglev mileage but exclude modern trams and suburban rail mileage. Thumbnail maps of the rail transit networks have been included in the chart for cities with over 100km of mileage.
