As 2020 (the Year of the Metal Rat) comes to a close, the latest Rail Transit Rankings are officially released.

This marks the eighth year of producing these rankings. With the increasing volume of data, the content we can present has become richer. To make it easier for everyone to check the latest data at any time without waiting for the annual summary, the MetroMan App has launched a real-time updated national ranking feature.

Despite the impact of the pandemic in 2020, China's infrastructure construction did not halt, and urban rail transit construction continued in full swing across the country. This year, a total of 26 cities added new rail transit lines. Among them, Taiyuan joined as a new member, bringing the total number of cities with rail transit to 44.

Several cities performed exceptionally well this year:

  • Chengdu: Added a staggering 216 km of operating mileage in one go, reaching a total of 518 km and jumping to 3rd place on the list (Note: Guangzhou's data does not include Foshan's mileage, temporarily placing it 4th).
  • Hangzhou: Operating mileage doubled, adding 171 km to reach 306 km, rising 8 places to successfully enter the Top 10 (9th place).
  • Hohhot & Xuzhou: Rankings rose rapidly due to new lines, rising 9 places (to 31st) and 7 places (to 33rd) respectively.

Note: As in the past, the cutoff for the rankings is the end of the Lunar New Year. Data is rounded to the nearest whole number, and statistics exclude trams and suburban railways.

This summary features newly created charts to present the data more comprehensively.
