2023 China Metro Rankings Report Cover

This marks the 11th year of producing the Rail Transit Rankings.

This year, we continue with last year's statistical standard, adopting the "Metropolitan Area Network" model. The design continues to emphasize the correlation between actual route network maps and mileage, allowing for a more intuitive display of each city's network layout characteristics. (Note: The real-time rankings within the MetroMan App still retain data based on "Single City Network" statistics for convenient user access.)

2023 Core Changes

  • Statistical Period Adjustment: To avoid confusion, starting this year, the rankings use the Calendar Year (Gregorian calendar) for statistics.
  • New Developments: A total of 29 cities added rail transit mileage this year.
  • New Entrants: Chuzhou, Xuchang.
  • Event of the Year: The opening of Suzhou Line 11 officially connected the rail transit networks of Shanghai and Suzhou, marking a new stage in cross-city interconnection.

Metropolitan Area Integration Progress

As more urban rail networks expand and merge, the trend of "city integration" becomes increasingly apparent:

  • Interconnected:
    • Shanghai-Suzhou Integration: Shanghai and Suzhou (connected via Suzhou Line 11).
    • Zhengzhou-Xuchang Integration: Zhengzhou and Xuchang (the newly opened Xuchang Rail is connected to the Zhengzhou network).
    • Guangzhou Metro Area: Includes Foshan (Future links to Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, etc.).
    • Nanjing Metro Area: Includes Zhenjiang Jurong (Future links to Ma'anshan, Chuzhou, Yangzhou).
    • Hangzhou Metro Area: Includes Shaoxing, Jiaxing Haining (Future links to Huzhou Deqing).
    • Taipei Metro Area: Includes New Taipei, Taoyuan (Future links to Keelung).
  • Integrating/Connecting Soon:
    • Xi'an Metro Area: Xi'an and Xianyang are in the process of integration.
    • Beijing Metro Area: Connection to Langfang and Xiong'an is imminent.
    • Chengdu Metro Area: Ziyang, Meishan, etc.
    • Shenzhen Metro Area: Dongguan, Huizhou.
    • Xiamen Metro Area: Zhangzhou, Quanzhou.

Statistical Note: Data is rounded to the nearest whole number. This ranking does not include trams without independent right-of-way, light rail, SkyShuttle (Cloud Bus), suburban railways utilizing existing lines, or tourism-oriented rail lines.
